A very popular preaching in church today is that when you sin the Holy Spirit leaves you. That means that he probably leaves us many times in a day. What does the bible say?
Most believers have not understood why God gave them the Holy Spirit. They think he is in their lives to bully them and make them see how sinful they are. To them the Holy Spirit is always here to judge them. John 16:7 But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
One purpose of the Holy Spirit is to convict the world (not the believer) of sin. That is to make them realize that they are lost without Christ. That is the sin of the world (unbelief in Christ). To the believer, he is a faithful guide in your Christian journey. He is in your life to guide, correct and strengthen you in your walk with God. He does not abandon you when you sin because that is when you need him most. Think of it. If the doctor stays around you when you are well and leaves you immediately you get sick, then he is not needed in your life. In fact you need him more when you are sick. It is the same with the holy spirit John 14:16And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever. Jesus said he will be with us forever. So he doesn’t go on vacation or abandon you because you have done wrong. Remember he loves you unconditionally.
Are you saying we can live anyhow? No please. John 16:13However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.
When you go contrary to the truth, he will bring you right back on track. He doesn’t condemn. He is there to ensure that you get back on your feet. Romans 8:1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. You see!. If only you would walk with him he wouldn’t condemn you. He will help you get it right every time. Now don’t get scared of him. Receive his help every time you need him. When you feel guilty and sorrowful, it’s the devil trying to take advantage of you to scare you from approaching God.
The Bible however talks about grieving the Spirit, Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. This happens when you live in continual disobedience to God’s word and to his leading. When you reject his counsel and do your own thing, you grieve him. The result is that you can quench his work in your life. This means that the more you disobey him, the more difficult it becomes for you to hear from him and obey him. That way you become less sensitive to his work in your life, 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit.
