We have been made to believe that the Holy Spirit makes people act against their will. Sometimes you will hear them say “the spirit was forcing me to do this or that, he said if I don’t do it he will punish me”. Satan uses such coercion, the fetish priests and others will tell you. The Holy Spirit does not force people to do what they do not want to do. We have seen from scripture that man is a free moral agent. He has every moral right to choose to obey or disobey God. That is why we shall all stand before God to account for our actions. Satan and his demons take control of people and force them to do things against their will. There is the story of a man in the bible who slept in the tombs and cut himself with stones. I’m not sure he enjoyed doing that. The demons controlled him that way. The bible also teaches that before satan or demons can even control you that way you have to first allow them place in your life Ephesians 4:27 27and do not give the devil a foothold.. If you don’t give him a foothold in your life, he cannot control you.
It is the same with God’s Spirit. He leads you and you must follow John 16:13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.. He doesn’t force you into truth. He guides you. You can decide to obey him or not. He will not threaten you. But remember it has consequences. His leading is always to bring you peace so if you ignore him you will hurt yourself. Romans 8:14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. Being led means being willing to follow him.
